What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves administering medication to help anxious or fearful patients feel more relaxed and at ease while receiving dental care. It's sometimes called "sleep dentistry," although most patients are awake during the procedure. Dental sedation can be used for everything from routine cleaning to complex dental procedures. It also allows for multiple procedures during a single visit, helping to alleviate stress and anxiety.

Are You a Candidate For Sedation Dentistry?

Dental sedation is ideal for patients who have fear or anxiety that prevents them from receiving dental care. Sedation dentistry might also be appropriate if you experience any of the following:

  • A severe gag reflex
  • A low pain threshold
  • Extremely sensitive teeth
  • Fear of needles or dental tools
  • Frequently cancel dental appointments due to fear
  • General discomfort with the sounds, tastes, or scents associated with receiving dental care

Types of Dental Sedation

Nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation are the most common types of sedation dentistry. Depending on your individual needs, varying levels of sedation (mild, moderate, and deep), can be used. Each of these options creates a calming effect that helps you relax during your dental procedure:

  • Nitrous oxide: Commonly known as "laughing gas," nitrous oxide is a mild sedative. The gas is inhaled during your procedure, and it provides a light level of sedation that helps you relax.
  • Oral conscious sedation: With oral conscious sedation, you'll take oral medication at a specific time before your appointment. The medication may make you feel drowsy, but you'll remain awake and be able to respond to Dr. Presley. Although you'll be awake during your procedure, you'll feel significantly calmer and relaxed. The medication is designed to induce a state of deep relaxation, so you'll be less aware of the procedure.
  • IV sedation: This is a form of moderate sedation. The sedative is administered intravenously, allowing it to work quickly. Your dentist controls the level of sedation. You'll still be able to respond to Dr. Presley, but you may drift in and out of sleep.
