What are Dental Lasers?
A laser is, to put it simply, a narrow beam of intense light energy. There are different kinds of dental lasers, each with its own properties and purposes. At our practice, we use a Gemini EVO laser, which is specifically intended for performing treatments involving the gums. As a diode laser, it is very useful for treating gum disease since it can target the affected area of the tissue without damaging the parts that are still healthy.
Types of Laser Dental Treatments
There are several possible applications of lasers in dentistry. At our office, we use lasers for periodontal treatment, gum recontouring, cold sore treatment, and gum inflammation treatment. Here’s a closer look at each of these procedures.
Periodontal Treatment
Gum disease is an infection of the soft tissues protecting the roots of your teeth. With a dental laser, we can remove the diseased gum tissue so that it won’t cause further problems. Compared to traditional periodontal surgery, this approach is much less invasive.
Gum Recontouring
Is there just too much gum tissue visible whenever you pull back your lips to smile? We can help you improve the appearance of your grin with a gum recontouring procedure. By using a dental laser to remove excess gum tissue, we can help you create a more balanced gumline that won’t draw attention away from your beautiful teeth.
Cold Sore & Gum Inflammation Treatment
Cold sores can form on the lips or in the mouth, and they can be quite painful. However, a laser treatment can actually stop a cold sore from breaking out if you act quickly enough. On top of that, if you undergo repeated treatments, you may be able to stop cold sores from appearing in that area again.
Furthermore, if your mouth is in pain due to gum inflammation, we can use a dental laser to help you find relief. Again, a benefit of using a laser for this type of treatment is that it lets us specifically target the areas where inflammation is present while leaving the surrounding tissue alone.
The Benefits of Laser Dentistry
Here are just some of the advantages of choosing laser dentistry for certain procedures:
- Your mouth will need less time to heal afterward.
- The laser will seal off exposed blood vessels, thereby resulting in less bleeding.
- Laser dental treatments cause less discomfort and can reduce the need for local anesthetic.
- The energy from the laser can kill the bacteria that could potentially lead to post-op infections.
